Teofimo Lopez does not want to give Vasiliy Lomachenko a rematch. That’s the verdict from Keith Idec, who joined Chris Mannix on a recent episode of Jabs, which can be seen on the DAZN Boxing Show.
Last October, Lopez caused one of the upsets of 2020 when he produced a disciplined display to defeat Lomachenko on points. The result made Lopez the world’s best lightweight and he can enhance that position when he faces George Kambosos on October 4th. Despite having many options for future fights, Idec doesn’t believe the Ukranian is one of them.
"People do want to see this Lomachenko vs. Lopez or Lopez vs. Lomachenko rematch,” said Idec. “But I do understand from Lopez's perspective why he's not so eager to give Lomachenko a rematch. There was an air of arrogance about the way Lomachenko went about their first fight. They did not insist on a rematch clause in the contract when they could’ve had all the leverage.
“When I spoke to Egis Klimas the week of the fight, he was pretty dismissive about the need for a rematch clause before the fight. Now all of a sudden, they want to rematch. Well, he should have done due diligence in putting the contract together and you might have a rematch. The fans want to see it.”
