The football season may have only finished last month but the hard work for the next campaign is already underway with teams already strengthening their squads. Liverpool are the latest team to add to their ranks with the £85m capture of Darwin Nunez.

Here, DAZN takes a look at the prolific Uruguayan as he looks to become the latest Anfield goalscoring hero.

Who is Darwin Nunez?

Darwin Nunez is a Uruguayan footballer who plays for Liverpool FC in the English Premier League. He is 22 years old and he grew up in Artigas in his native country. As a youngster, Nunez was inspired to play football as a way of creating a better life for his parents who earned little money. His mother would collect bottles and his dad was a construction worker.

Nunez was recruited by the legendary Penarol club as a youth player and that is where he would serve the early part of his playing career before embaring on his European adventure.

What position does he play?

Nunez is a centre forward who can also play on the left side of attack. A player blessed with pace, Nunez is sometimes played wide so he can exploit full backs, but the majority of his play is through the middle.

Who has he played for?

After beginning his career with Penarol in Uruguay, Nunez's early potential was discovered by Almeria and the spanish club signed him in 2019. After 16 goals in 30 appearances, Nunez was on the radar of many big clubs in Europe before Benfica made him their record signing in 2020. Since signing for the Portuguese giants, Nunez has 32 goals in 57 games and has also picked up plenty of Champions League experience. Jurgen Klopp admitted earlier this year he was a big admire of Nunez and the German manager has backed his judgement by splashing out on him for Liverpool.

Why are Liverpool signing him?

Set to lose the brilliant Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich, Liverpool's famous front three is about to be broken up so a new name was needed to ensure the club continue to be threatening in front of goal. Nunez has proven to be quality in front of goal for his previous clubs and Liverpool fans will be hopeful that he maintains that form. Looking like a complete centre forward, Nunez's ability in the air will be a different asset for Liverpool. Blessed with pace and skill in recent years, the English club now have someone who can be a constant menace in the box who can be found by Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander Arnold.
