As the festive season unfolds, the NFL brings fans an exciting Boxing Day clash between the Seattle Seahawks and the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.
Heading into the clash the Seahawks playoff destiny is not in their own hands - Sunday’s 27-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings coupled with the Rams beating the Jets 19-9 means that L.A. is 9-6 to Seattle’s 8-7.
In short, the Seahawks could be done by Saturday after the Rams host Arizona - they must beat the Bears to keep their faint hopes alive.
The Chicago side have struggled for form this season and come into the Boxing Day clash with a 4-11 record, bottom of NFC North on a nine-game losing streak.
Here's everything you need to know about this intriguing matchup.
Seahawks' playoff hopes
Seattle enters this game with the playoff hopes hanging by a thread - for them it is a must-win.
Quarterback Geno Smith has continued to evolve into a reliable leader, and the team’s balanced offensive attack is complemented by a defence that has shown flashes of brilliance.
However, consistency has been an issue as was evidenced by his late game intercept against the Vikings on Sunday which ended their hopes of a come-from-behind win.
"It was an interception, man," Smith told reporters. "Anything you see that goes wrong, put it on me." Can the Seahawks stay composed under pressure in the chilly Chicago weather? That's the big question.
Bears struggling
For the Bears, 2024 was meant to be a breakout season after a couple of years of rebuilding.
That hasn't been the case though and after a positive start they are now nine games without a win and the results are taking their toll on quarterback Caleb Williams.
In a recent interview with ESPN, he said: "Losing is one of those things that really affects me. It's tough. But I do have the understanding of where I'm at in my career and where I'll be at."
While Chicago may be out of the playoff picture, they can play spoiler to the Seahawks' hopes while continuing to build a strong foundation for the future.
Key matchup: Caleb Williams vs. Seahawks' defence
Williams, a dual-threat player, excels in extending plays with his legs and delivering precise deep throws under pressure.
He may however be low on confidence and Seattle’s defence, with cornerback Tariq Woolen in form, must use this to disrupt Williams' timing and force him into quick decisions.
The Seahawks' pass rush will be critical in limiting his ability to scramble and create outside the pocket. Containing Williams’ versatility could be the difference between a decisive victory and a long, frustrating day for Seattle.
Weather factor at Soldier Field
Soldier Field in late December is notorious for its freezing temperatures and swirling winds, which can play havoc on the passing game. Seattle’s offense will need to adjust to these conditions, particularly with Smith relying on big-play receivers DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.
Meanwhile, the Bears may lean more heavily on their ground game, utilizing their running backs to take advantage of the weather.
Seahawks’ X-factor: Kenneth Walker III
Seattle’s young running back Kenneth Walker III has been a revelation this season, showcasing speed, power, and elusiveness. With the Bears' defence ranking near the bottom of the league in run defence, Walker could be a game-changer.
Expect the Seahawks to establish the run early to set up their play-action game.
Bears’ X-factor: DJ Moore
Williams' favourite target, wide receiver DJ Moore, has been a bright spot for Chicago this season.
His ability to make contested catches and break free for big gains could tilt the game in the Bears' favour. Seattle’s secondary will need to stay disciplined to prevent Moore from making game-changing plays.
Prediction
The Seahawks come into the game as favourites. However, playing on the road against a spirited Bears team won’t be easy.
Expect a closely contested battle where turnovers and execution in key moments will make the difference. The Seahawks have more to play for and that should count for something.
