Everyone wants to be the winner and nobody wants to be the loser, but sometimes in sport you are neither.
Draws and ties are commonplace in sports all across the world, with teams forced to share the spoils at the end of their respective games.
But with overtime rules in the NFL, can there be a tie in the NFL? DAZN explains.
Can there be a tie in American Football?
During the regular season, games in the NFL can end as a tie - though they are rare.
For a regular season NFL game to end as a tie, firstly the teams must finish the initial four quarters with the same number of points.
If that is the case the game will go to a 10-minute overtime, before which a coin will be tossed to determine who has first possession of the ball.
A game is won in overtime if the team who wins the toss scores a touchdown on their initial possession. If however they score a field goal, the other team will have a drive of their own.
If on that drive they score a touchdown they win the game, a successful field goal would result in sudden death and failing to score would see them lose.
If the team who has the initial possession fails to score, the game is won by the first team to score in a sudden death format.
Any score - whether a field goal, safety or touchdown - would win the game during sudden death.
If at the end of 10 minutes the scores are still level the game ends as a tie.
Can there be a tie in the NFL postseason?
The rules are different during the playoffs, as a winner needs to be decided to progress to the next round.
Tied games after the initial four quarters go to overtime as normal, but should the game remain level additional overtimes will be played until a winner is found.
The most recent double-overtime NFL game came in 2013 when the Baltimore Ravens eventually beat the Denver Broncos 38-35.
How many ties have there been?
Since the introduction of overtime in 1974 there have been just 29 games that have ended in a tie.
The most regular season ties in a single season since has been two - which occurred in 1986, 1997, 2016, 2018 and 2022.
During the 2022 season, the Houston Texans vs. Indianapolis Colts and New York Giants vs. Washington Commanders both ended 20-20.
