Could Baker Mayfield re-sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday afternoon? It is possible.

Mayfield is now a pending free agent, but if he re-signs with Tampa on Monday, he would help the team save $1.7 million against the 2024 salary cap.

The former Heisman Trophy Award winner enjoyed a remarkable bounce-back 2023-24 campaign. Mayfield inked a one-year 'prove-it' deal with Tampa before last season.

Mayfield led the Bucs to an NFC South title and a playoff win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

At the Pro Bowl, Mayfield was coy about his future. Mayfield stated that his return would depend on who the offensive coordinator was.

The Bucs have hired Liam Coen as their new offensive coordinator. Coen briefly worked with Mayfield in LA.

Sources within Tampa see Coen's arrival as a critical indicator for Mayfield's return.

During Super Bowl week, Mayfield spoke glowingly about the Buccaneers. On Kevin Clark's This is Football show, Mayfield said, "I needed to get into an organization that would put me in a position to succeed. And unfortunately, only a handful of those are around the league."

After disappointing Cleveland and Carolina stints, Mayfield has found a home. NFL insiders suggest that Mayfield's overall contract could be worth $75 million.

Head coach Todd Bowles praised Mayfield at Tampa's end-of-season press conference. Bowles said, "Baker had a hell of a year. We love him. The guys love him. And we'll see what the future holds."

But Mayfield will have plenty of suitors on the open market. Many teams are desperate for talented quarterbacks. Mayfield is still just 28 and is arguably the best free-agent quarterback available.
