Former NFL corner Jason Bell names 'real hurdle' to NFL success for Louis Rees-ZammitDAZN

The rugby world was stunned on Wednesday as Wales wing Louis Rees-Zammit announced he was quitting the sport to pursue a career in the NFL.

The 22-year-old has joined the NFL's international player pathway (IPP) with the aim of securing a place on an American football team in 2024.

Rees-Zammit has eye-catching speed which he used to great effect for his club Gloucester and country Wales.

But now Rees-Zammit will look to use that speed - as well as his 6'3" frame - to break into the NFL.

And former NFL cornerback Jason Bell has identified the biggest challenge Rees-Zammit will have to overcome if he is to be a success in the NFL.

“It is going to be challenging but he obviously has the talent to do it," said Bell.

"The NFL requires so many different skillsets and if you find the right coach who can hone your skills, you can find a role quickly.

“Transferring those skills is the real hurdle, but he can definitely get over that hurdle – it just takes time.

"He has been such a high-level athlete but I personally know how long it takes to develop the skills needed to play in the NFL.

"It might even take him a year to get it all together, but he’s young enough for that to work. He is only 22 years old so if he can hit his stride by 24, that would be amazing!"
