Former Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans and New York Giants cornerback Jason Bell says San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey should be the front-runner to be named MVP this season.

The 49ers are 5-0 through five weeks of the 2023 season, having comfortably beaten the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football last time out.

That win was McCaffrey’s quietest game of the season, with just 51 rushing yards and two receptions, however he did find the end zone for a score.

In total through five weeks, McCaffrey has rushed for 510 yards and seven touchdowns while adding 168 yards off 20 catches for another score.

The MVP award is almost always won by a quarterback, the last non-QB to be named MVP was Adrian Peterson back in 2012.

Marshall Faulk, Shaun Alexander and LaDainian Tomlinson are the only other non-QB players to be named MVP since 2000 - all of which are running backs.

“Christian McCaffrey, he should be the MVP front runner right now,” Bell told DAZN UK.

“We know we give it to the quarterback of the number one seed, but this dude is amazing for what he does for the team, what he does as a skill player.

“He is absolutely everything they need and everything Kyle Shanahan could dream of as a playmaker.”

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, Josh Allen and Brock Purdy pose the biggest competition for the MVP award to McCaffrey.
