The New England Patriots have been the dominant force in the NFL since the turn of the century, but it has not always been that way.
The Patriots were founded in November 1959, and competed in their first NFL season the next year.
It would take 26 years for the franchise to reach its first Super Bowl, and another 16 before winning it for the first time
Hall of fame wide receiver Raymond Berry turned to coaching after his playing career and led the Patriots to their first Super Bowl in 1986, only to suffer a heavy 46-10 defeat to the Chicago Bears.
Things were not much better 11 years later when the Patriots returned for their second appearance, only to once again fall at the final hurdle - this time against the Green Bay Packers.
But the fortunes of this franchise would change dramatically with the appointment of head coach Bill Belichick and the drafting of a certain quarterback named Tom Brady.
The Patriots would go on to win three Super Bowls in four seasons between 2001 and 2005 before shock defeats to the New York Giants in 2008 and 2012.
New England have reached four more since those losses, winning three, the most recent of which saw them tie the Pittsburgh Steelers with six Super Bowls wins.
