Pittsburgh joined the NFL back in 1933, originally as the Pittsburgh Pirates before changing the franchise's name to the Steelers seven years later.
Between 1933 and 1971, the Steelers reached the play-offs on just one occasion! That year was 1947, and the run ended after one game when they lost 21-0 to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Things changed dramatically however with the arrival of new head coach Chuck Noll, whose ability to spot talent each year at the NFL Draft turned Pittsburgh into the NFL's dominant team of the 1970s.
Most famously, Noll drafted four future Hall of Fame players in the 1974 NFL draft, something no other team has ever done.
Pittsburgh's new recruits in the early 1970s made an instant impact, and the Steelers became the only team in NFL history to win four Super Bowls in six years between 1975 and 1980.
The Steelers' first Super Bowl loss came in 1996, as the Dallas Cowboys got revenge for 1976 and 1979 with a 27-17 win in Arizona.
But 10 years later Pittsburgh were champions again, beating the Seattle Seahawks for a fifth Super Bowl before winning a sixth win three years later against the Arizona Cardinals.
Another Super Bowl defeat followed in 2011, but no team can claim to have won more Vince Lombardi trophies than Pittsburgh.
