Patrick Mahomes now has a new dynamic weapon. His name is Xavier Worthy.
On his very first touch in his first NFL game, the rookie wide receiver rushed for a 21-yard touchdown in the first quarter. During the fourth quarter, Worthy burned his man in 1-on-1 coverage and Mahomes linked up with the speedy wideout for a 35-yard touchdown.
Those electrifying TDs helped power the way for the defending back-to-back Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs to deliver a 27-20 home win over the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday Night Football to launch the 2024 NFL season.
Though Worthy's second touchdown put the Chiefs up 27-17 with 10:25 left in the game, Justin Tucker's second field goal pulled the Ravens within 27-20 with just under five minutes remaining.
Mahomes saved the Chiefs from a potentially-disastrous interception when his pass was deflected and popped up into the air, only for the superstar quarterback to leap up and snag his own attempt with 2:36 remaining.
Lamar Jackson led the Ravens down the field, missing a wide open Zay Flowers in the end zone with an incomplete pass in which there seemed to be miscommunication between the two.
With five seconds left, Jackson took another shot in the end zone and found Isaiah Likely for the touchdown, though an official review overturned the score as the receiver just failed to drag a second foot in the end zone.
Jackson finished with 273 passing yards and a touchdown, while adding another 122 yards rushing.
Mahomes' 291 yards in the air helped make him the Chiefs' all-time leader in passing yards.
Here are the key play updates and highlights from the Chiefs' season-opening win over the Chiefs.
