The Chicago Bears are 48 days away from a franchise-altering decision. The Bears hold the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and their choice could set them up for success or failure.
The 2024 NFL Draft features plenty of promising quarterback prospects. Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels are among the finest prospects in recent years.
But the Bears already have an incumbent quarterback. Chicago drafted Justin Fields in 2021. Fields has shown glimpses of exceptional talent while mixing in erratic performances. Nonetheless, Fields is now an experienced starter.
The debate in Chicago is whether the Bears should stick with Fields or draft a rookie.
The Draft Network CEO Paige Dimakos was a guest on the Up & Adams show. Commenting on this subject, Dimakos said: "Deep in my heart, I want Justin Fields to stay. But everything with my brain and the financial dynamics of having to pay Justin soon is a big part of this.
"Even if Caleb Williams is not better than Justin Fields, it's a financial win for the Bears. To me, it is logical to draft Caleb Williams, although I know Bears fans are split on this."
Dimakos continued: "You cannot let Caleb Williams go be a phenom somewhere else."
Williams is a former Heisman Trophy winner. Many draft experts have projected him as the first overall pick. Some analysts have even compared him to Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes.
Fields himself called for a swift resolution to the saga several weeks ago. NFL insiders hinted that the combine would be where the Bears made a decision. A week removed from the combine, there has not been any movement on Fields' future or what Chicago will do with the first pick.
