London's Wembley Stadium is a historic venue for many reasons.

From huge football matches to memorable concerts, the stadium has been the setting for some iconic moments in sport and culture, but it also has a long history with the NFL.

Before the league began staging staging regular season games at the venue in 2007, a number teams played in the English capital during the 1980s, the first match being in 1983 when the Minnesota Vikings and St. Louis Cardinals appeared in a pre-season game dubbed The Global Cup.

This then led to the NFL creating the American Bowl, a series of pre-season games which began in 1986. The first of these games saw the Chicago Bears beat the Dallas Cowboys 17-6 in front of a sell-out crowd.

These American Bowl games would not just be staged at Wembley, but across the world in various locations from the Tokyo Dome in Japan to Stadium Australia in Sydney, with the last of these exhibition games taking place on August 6, 2005 when the Atlanta Falcons beat the Indianapolis Colts 27-21 in Japan.

Since then the NFL has staged regular season games since 2007 and due to their success, this has been a regular occurence each season since with the stadium sometimes hosting multiple matches.

How many NFL games have been held at Wembley Stadium?

During the American Bowl era, Wembley Stadium hosted seven games between 1986 and 1991.

Since 2007 when the New York Giants faced the Miami Dolphins in the first ever NFL International Series game, Wembley has hosted 25 matches with the last being in October 2023 when the Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Atlanta Falcons 23-7.

How many fans can Wembley Stadium hold?

Wembley Stadium can hold up to 90,000 fans for a sporting event.

When is the next NFL game at Wembley?

Wembley Stadium will be hosting just one regular season game in 2024.

It will see the Jacksonville Jaguars, who have made London their second home, take on the New England Patriots.

The game will take place on Sunday, October 20 with the kick-off scheduled for 2:30 p.m. UK / 9:30 a.m. ET.

With both teams struggling this season, this game and a win could be what is needed to revitalise their respective campaigns.
