The Kansas City Chiefs’ dream of creating history with an unprecedented Super Bowl ‘three-peat’ remains alive following their Divisional Round win over the Houston Texans.
For the seventh year in a row, Andy Reid’s side will contest the AFC Championship game, hosting the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday.
Should Patrick Mahomes and company battle past the Josh Allen-led Bills, they will be one win away from doing what eight other back-to-back Super Bowl winners have not and take home a third consecutive Vince Lombardi Trophy.
DAZN News takes a look at the eight previous double-winners who failed it make it three in a row.
1968 - Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers did celebrate three titles in a row at the start of the Super Bowl era, given they won the 1965 NFL title in the final season before the NFL and AFL’s best faced off against each other.
But their quest to win Super Bowl III came up short in 1968 when they went 6-7-1 and missed the playoffs after head coach Vince Lombardi had resigned and handed coaching duties to Phil Bengston.
1974 - Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins followed up their perfect 1972 season by defending their Super Bowl title 12 months later, but they would run out of steam in the Divisional Round when they lost 28-26 to the Raiders.
1976 and 1980 - Pittsburgh Steelers
The dominant Steelers of the 1970s had two shots at a three-peat during the franchise’s golden age.
Their first came in 1976 when the Raiders saw them off in the AFC Championship game, before Terry Bradshaw and company failed to make the playoffs when they defended their Super Bowl XIV crown in 1980.
1990 - San Francisco 49ers
After rounding out the 1980s with their third and fourth titles of the decade, the San Francisco 49ers saw their three-peat hopes end when they lost a gruelling NFC Championship Game against the New York Giants, with Leonard Marshall’s brutal hit on Joe Montana effectively ending the quarterback’s 49ers career.
1994 - Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys would win three out of four Super Bowls in the 1990s, but the 1994 title was the one that got away, when they came up short to their bitter rivals the 49ers in the NFC Championship game.
1999 - Denver Broncos
An ageing John Elway had led the Broncos to the first two Super Bowl titles in their history in the 1997 and 1998 seasons, but the veteran signal-caller opted to hang up his cleats following the Super Bowl XXXIII win over the Falcons. Rookie quarterback Brian Griese was handed the unenviable task of replacing a legend and could only lead Denver to a 6-10 finish.
2005 - New England Patriots
The Brady and Belichick axis brought about the most dominant one-team stretch in the Super Bowl era, but even they could not make it three in a row.
After successes in 2003 and 2004, their 2005 campaign ended in a 27-13 Divisional Round defeat to Denver.
