Norm Snead (1939–2024)
Snead was a four-time Pro Bowl quarterback whose career spanned from 1961 to 1976. He played for several teams, including the Washington Football Team, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Giants. Known for his rocket arm and resilience, Snead threw for over 30,000 career passing yards.
Though he never reached a Super Bowl, Snead’s consistency and leadership left a lasting impression, particularly in Washington and Philadelphia. He remains one of the most respected quarterbacks of his era.
Carl Weathers (1948–2024)
Before becoming a Hollywood star as Apollo Creed in Rocky, Carl Weathers had a brief NFL career, playing as a linebacker for the Oakland Raiders in 1970.
While his NFL career was short-lived, Weathers transitioned seamlessly into acting, becoming an icon in sports films and later starring in hit shows like The Mandalorian. His contributions to both football and entertainment are fondly remembered.
Rich Caster (1948–2024)
Caster was a three-time Pro Bowler who excelled as a tight end and wide receiver. Playing primarily for the New York Jets, he was known for his speed and versatility.
Over a 13-year career, Caster amassed over 5,500 receiving yards and was part of the Washington team that won Super Bowl XVII. Off the field, Caster’s work as an NFL Players Association advocate earned him respect far beyond his playing days.
Andy Russell (1941–2024)
A cornerstone of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ famed Steel Curtain defence, Russell was a seven-time Pro Bowler and two-time Super Bowl champion.
As a linebacker, he was known for his intelligence, tackling prowess, and leadership both on and off the field. Meanwhile Russell’s charitable efforts in Pittsburgh made him a beloved figure long after his playing career ended.
Vontae Davis (1988–2024)
Davis was a two-time Pro Bowler and one of the league’s top cornerbacks during his prime, playing for the Dolphins, Colts, and Bills.
He famously retired mid-game during a 2018 Bills matchup, a decision that sparked headlines and showcased his strong individuality. At the time he said: "This isn't how I pictured retiring from the NFL, but today on the field, reality hit me and hard. I shouldn't be out there anymore."
O.J. Simpson (1947–2024)
Simpson, nicknamed ‘The Juice,’ was a Hall of Fame running back best known for his time with the Buffalo Bills. He was the first NFL player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a season (1973).
While his legal troubles overshadowed his football legacy, Simpson’s impact on the field as one of the game’s greatest running backs remains undeniable. His passing reignited debates about separating on-field achievements from off-field controversies.
Roman Gabriel (1940–2024)
Gabriel was one of the first Asian American quarterbacks in the NFL and a four-time Pro Bowler. He starred for the Los Angeles Rams and later the Philadelphia Eagles.
In 1969, Gabriel won NFL MVP honours, leading the Rams to an 11-3 record. Gabriel pursued coaching and acting once he retired, remaining a prominent figure in sports and entertainment circles.
Joel Collier (1931–2024)
A revered coach and personnel executive, Collier spent decades shaping NFL rosters, including contributions to the Miami Dolphins' legendary 1972 perfect season. His impact on scouting and player development was immense, earning respect across the league.
Off the field, Collier was known for mentoring young coaches and promoting diversity in the NFL's front offices.
Jimmy Johnson (1938–2024)
A Hall of Fame cornerback, Johnson earned accolades as a 4× First-team All-Pro and a 5× Pro Bowler during his time with the San Francisco 49ers. His defensive prowess redefined the cornerback position.
After retiring, Johnson became a beloved analyst and ambassador for the sport, using his platform to inspire the next generation of players.

Jim Otto (1938–2024)
Career highlights: One of the toughest centres in NFL history, Otto played 15 seasons for the Oakland Raiders and was a charter member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Known for his durability, he played 210 consecutive games.
