NFL great Jerry Rice holds almost every conceivable record possible for a wide receiver. He is a true legend of the game.
One of his most incredible records starts on this day back in 1985. Playing for the San Francisco 49ers, December 9, 1985, marks the beginning of his record run of 274 consecutive games with a reception.
Who was Jerry Rice?
Jerry Rice is widely regarded as the greatest wide receiver — and perhaps the greatest ever player — in NFL history.
Born in Starkville, Mississippi, in 1962, Rice honed his skills catching bricks for his father, a mason. He later played college football at Mississippi Valley State University, where his prolific performances earned him the nickname "World."
Selected 16th overall in the 1985 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, Rice quickly established himself as an elite receiver. Known for his extraordinary work ethic, precise route running, and unmatched hands.
In short, Rice transformed the wide receiver position.
The 274-game record
Rice’s streak of 274 consecutive games with a reception began on December 9, 1985, during his rookie season and it spanned an incredible 18 seasons. It only ended on September 19, 2004, while he was playing for the Oakland Raiders.
This achievement is a testament to Rice’s consistency, durability, and adaptability in a physically demanding sport.
For context, no other player in NFL history has come close to this streak. The record reflects not only his skill but his longevity, a rare combination which sets him apart, even from even other Hall of Famers.
Second on the list is another icon and a marvellously enduring athlete, Tony Gonzalez - the Chiefs tight end made receptions in 265 consecutive games.

He also boasts the most 1,000-yard receiving seasons (14) and the most career Super Bowl touchdown receptions.
His contributions helped the 49ers to three Super Bowl victories, further cementing his legacy.
