As the 2024 NFL season edges closer to an action-packed play-off schedule, plenty of teams and fans are taking stock of the ups and downs they have faced this season.

For the Seattle Seahawks, a narrow 6-3 win over the Chicago Bears keeps them in the hunt for a berth, as they chase a first postseason spot in two years.

But supporters may also use the festive period to reflect on one of their all-time greats - and the history he made on a cold December date all those decades ago.

Today, DAZN looks back at the legendary wide receiver Steve Largent, and when he made history on this day in 1987, in the wider context of his life and career.

Who was Steve Largent?

Born in 1954 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Largent was tipped for a successful transition to professional football as he grew through the school and the collegiate game over two decades.

He made his name at the University of Tulsa with a reputation for big plays and catches, and was drafted in the fourth round of the 1976 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers.

Largent did not take to life in Texas and was traded to Seattle during the preseason for a future pick, going on to establish himself as a fan-favourite in Washington.

When did he make history?

Largent spent the following decade building a formidable reputation, maintaining a longevity in a sport that typically chewed up the WR position through wear-and-tear injuries.

On December 27, 1987, he played for the Seahawks against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, where he took a modest 7-yard reception midway through the match.

With that, he took the competition's all-time record for career catches, with 751, moving outright ahead of Charlie Joiner, who previously held the record with 750.

What other records did he break?

Largent continued to play until his retirement after the 1989 season, departing the Seahawks with 819 career receptions, 100 touchdown receptions and 13,089 receiving yards.

The former stood as a record for another six years, until Jerry Rice surpassed it in 1995 - the same year Largent was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame to boot.

His number 80 became the first retired by Seattle, while he earned seven Pro Bowl selections throughout his career, though he never managed to triumph in the Super Bowl.

What did he do after football?

Following his retirement from the sport, Largent made a move into politics, and served in the U.S. House of Representatives for Oklahoma's 1st district as a Republican.

He was first elected in 1994 and was a convincing winner in all subsequent elections through 2002, when he stood down in order to run for Governor of Oklahoma.

He lost the subsequent gubernatorial election in a surprise upset to Democrat contender Brad Henry, and retired from political office in earnest shortly afterwards.
