When the Kansas City Chiefs touched down in Las Vegas and turned up for the Super Bowl’s opening night on Monday, they sparked an all-new reaction from the fans present at the event.
Loud boos were heard from supporters, suggesting that the Chiefs team who have been relatively liked and certainly respected by the majority of fans in recent years, are now hated by many.
Of course, in any sport it’s natural for the haves to be berated by the have-nots and this fatigue will set in whenever a team just keeps on winning.
"Everybody used to love us,'' Chiefs defensive end Chris Jones said earlier this week. "We used to be one of the most favourite teams. Now everybody's ready for the Chiefs to lose.
"It's OK. They can continue hating. You call it hate when you win a whole lot. The problem is we haven't won as much as people think. We've won only two [Super Bowls], right? We only won two out of three.''
And now Patrick Mahomes has weighed in on the ‘villains’ debate, asking if he and his teammates will be embracing the new role.
“Not necessarily. I think I just like winning,’' Mahomes said as per PFT. “If you win a lot and that causes you to be a villain, then I’m OK with it. But at the end of the day, I’m going to enjoy playing the game and try to win as much as possible.’'
