He played both centre and guard, his versatility and his uncanny ability to adapt to the team’s needs made him a key member of the team and his standout performances earned him two AFL All-Star selections (1964, 1966), cementing his status as one of the league’s top linemen.
NFL and beyond
After the AFL-NFL merger, Sturm’s career continued with notable stints in both leagues.
New Orleans Saints: Sturm played with the Saints during their formative years, helping to establish the franchise.
Houston Oilers: He later joined the Oilers, bringing veteran leadership to their roster.
WFL Adventure: Sturm also played in the World Football League (WFL), extending his career and contributing to the sport’s growth in alternative leagues.
Life after football
Sturm transitioned into a successful post-football life, staying connected to his community. He owned and operated a popular restaurant in Denver, becoming a beloved local figure.
