Despite his collegiate success, Sturm went undrafted in the NFL, more an indictment on the era’s limited scouting than on Sturm’s abilities on the field.

However, his determination to play professionally never wavered and his chance eventually came.

Sturm’s professional breakthrough came in the American Football League (AFL), where he became a stalwart for the Denver Broncos.

He signed with Denver in 1961, quickly earning a reputation as a dependable and gritty offensive lineman. He played both centre and guard, his versatility and his uncanny ability to adapt to the team’s needs made him a key member of the team and his standout performances earned him two AFL All-Star selections (1964, 1966), cementing his status as one of the league’s top linemen.

NFL and beyond

After the AFL-NFL merger, Sturm’s career continued with notable stints in both leagues.

New Orleans Saints: Sturm played with the Saints during their formative years, helping to establish the franchise.

Houston Oilers: He later joined the Oilers, bringing veteran leadership to their roster.

WFL Adventure: Sturm also played in the World Football League (WFL), extending his career and contributing to the sport’s growth in alternative leagues.

Life after football

Sturm transitioned into a successful post-football life, staying connected to his community. He owned and operated a popular restaurant in Denver, becoming a beloved local figure.

While he also remained involved in youth sports, mentoring aspiring athletes and sharing his vast knowledge of the game.

In recognition of his contributions to the Denver Broncos, Sturm was inducted into the team’s Ring of Fame in 1984.
