The two quarterbacks are vying for the starting QB job in Pittsburgh this offseason.

It’s been all change in the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback room this offseason after the franchise cleared house and brought in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in the spring.

Wilson arrived on a cut-price contract after a disappointing two-year spell with the Denver Broncos, while Fields was obtained in a trade with the Chicago Bears, who drafted Caleb Williams first overall in the position earlier this year.

With training camp well underway and the team’s first preseason contest taking place on Saturday, August 10 when they take on the Houston Texans, the two are both vying for the starting QB job.

Wilson has been the presumptive favourite to win out, but a calf injury has restricted his training camp snaps, with the explosive Fields looking to take advantage.

The former Seattle Seahawk has now returned to action in a limited capacity and also opened up on his relationship with his competitor for the starting job, insisting that he wants to be a mentor for the man ten years his junior.

“Yeah, I think more than anything else, we’ve known each other for some years now, and I’ve always tried to be a mentor in some way to him,” Wilson said, via the team’s website.

“We’ve always texted, called, whatever it may be in the past, and same thing now. I believe that when you give as much knowledge that I have, or experienced or gone through, it comes back in return for you in the long run.

“We’re a team and we’re always trying to get better together. Every rep that he’s taking, I’m learning, and vice versa. Every rep that I’m taking, he’s learning. And all the other quarterbacks, as well. Even when we’re not in there, and we’re just processing from the drill work, we’re always talking and communicating.

“So, I think that’s a critical part to being successful as a team.”
