Shanahan has quickly become one of the best coaches in the NFL.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has quickly become one of the best in the NFL, following in the footsteps of his father Mike.

Shanahan started his career as 49ers head coach 0-9, but a year later they started the season 8-0 - becoming just the third head coach to oversee such a drastic change in 12 months.

Now, after just seven seasons as a head coach, Shanahan is taking his 49ers team back to the Super Bowl.

DAZN takes a look at Shanahan's coaching career to date.

Coaching career

  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Offensive quality control coach (2004-2005)
  • Houston Texans - Wide receivers coach (2006)
  • Houston Texans - Quarterbacks coach (2007)
  • Houston Texans - Offensive co-ordinator (2008-2009)
  • Washington Redskins - Offensive co-ordinator (2010-2013)
  • Cleveland Browns - Offensive co-ordinator (2014)
  • Atlanta Falcons - Offensive co-ordinator (2015-2016)
  • San Francisco 49ers - Head coach (2017-Present)

As a coach in the NFL, Shanahan spent time with five different franchises before landing his first head coach role with the 49ers.

Having begun his NFL coaching career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Shanahan worked his way up to offensive co-ordinator with the Houston Texans.

A successful couple of years with the Texans saw him move to Washington - then the Redskins - before more OC work in Cleveland and Atlanta.

After proving himself to be one of the best offensive minds in the business, San Francisco gave Shanahan his first role as a head coach in 2017.

What is his coaching record?

Shanahan has a 72-54 record as a head coach, including postseason games.

While a 57% win rate is lower than some of the NFL's other great head coaches, when you consider the 49ers won just 10 games total in his first two seasons, the turnaround is clear.

The 49ers have won over 70% of their games in three of the last five seasons - winning the NFC West divisional title in all three.

Shanahan's record in the postseason is also impressive, winning over 72% of games and leading the 49ers to two Super Bowls and two more NFC Championship games in the last five seasons.

How many Super Bowls has he won?

The only thing separating Shanahan from becoming a truly great coach is a Super Bowl.

Four years ago he led the 49ers there, only to be beaten by the Kansas City Chiefs 31-20 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.

This season, the 49ers are back again. And as fate should have it the Chiefs stand in their way once more.

Can Shanahan finally win a Vince Lombardi trophy as a head coach? Or will his Chiefs counterpart Andy Reid win a third?
