San Francisco 49ers star Brock Purdy insists he is ‘happy’ to see a number of his fellow quarterbacks land huge new deals this offseason, but insists he is not thinking about any looming negotiations over his future.
The likes of Trevor Lawrence, Jordan Love and Tua Tagovailoa have signed eye-watering contracts in recent weeks and Purdy is set to be in a position to sign an extension next year.
Although the prospect of a huge payday is on the horizon as Purdy moves on from his rookie deal, the 49ers signal caller is more concerned about getting his team over the line, after losing in last season’s Super Bowl.
"That's great. I'm happy for those guys," Purdy said on NFL Network, via 49ers Webzone.
"But for me and this team right now, we got to focus on 2024. This season is so long, and there's so much stuff that you go through. So to get caught up in what the years can look like down the road or anything like that, to me, that's pretty nonsense.
"So, focusing one day at a time. I have to get better for this team, and we all do here. So, that's where my focus is at, and all of our focus is at."
During his two years in the NFL so far Purdy has led San Francisco to consecutive NFC Championship games, with the 49ers losing Super Bowl LVIII to the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this year - but the 2022 seventh-round draft pick is taking nothing for granted this year.
“Every Sunday, you’re going to get everybody’s best shot, and nothing’s ever given to us. It doesn’t matter what you did last year, the years before,” he added.
“Every Sunday we have to go into it like we have to go and take it. And so, for me and myself, I never want to be complacent with we had this kind of season last year, the year before.
“It’s always a new season, and everybody’s coming back healthier and stronger, and you got to go take it every Sunday.”
