Nobody was quite sure what happened at first.

The San Francisco 49ers and Las Vegas Raiders were the last two teams to begin their 2023 preseason games, as they faced off at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday evening.

It was the first time that 49ers' quarterback Trey Lance played a competitive snap since his season-ending ankle injury in week two of last season.

Lance, the number three overall pick in 2021, is hoping to prove he is still the quarterback many predicted he would be when drafted by the NFC West team.

On his first drive back in action Lance was sacked twice, before dusting himself off and throwing the most bizarre touchdown of the 2023 preseason so far in the second quarter.

Of course Lance cannot take much credit for this throw, which could easily have turned into an interception for the Raiders.

But the quick reaction times of tight end Ross Dwelley saved Lance's blushes, as the 49ers levelled the score in the first half.
