Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith looks to have escaped a significant injury after receiving scans on knee and hip issues.
Smith, a second-round draft pick in 2013, is preparing for his sixth season in Seattle and third as starter since replacing Russell Wilson under centre for the Seahawks in 2022.
The team will enter a new era this season after parting company with head coach Pete Carroll after 14 years in January, with former Baltimore Ravens head coach Mike Macdonald the new man in charge.
Macdonald revealed his fears over the condition of his starting quarterback on Thursday, stating that Smith was ‘working through a couple of things from the other day’ after he missed the previous two days’ worth of practices.
Smith underwent imaging to determine the issue, but according to ESPN he ‘shouldn’t miss any time’ after the tests did not show any major issues with his knee or hip.
The 33-year-old has had to watch his backup Sam Howell, who the team obtained in a trade with the Washington Commanders in March, take first-team reps in practice this week, with veteran PJ Walker the team’s third-stringer.
Smith has enjoyed the best two statistical seasons of his 11-year career since taking over the starter’s job in Seattle, as the team hopes that the hiring of Macdonald can help them improve on last season’s 9-8 record which was only enough to finish third in a competitive NFC West.
The Seahawks' preseason sees them take on the LA Chargers next weekend, before clashes against the Tenessee Titans and Cleveland Browns. They will then kick off their regular season against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, September 8.
