Super Bowl LVIII takes place on February 11 as the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Fransisco 49ers at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The event is one of the biggest watched events in the sporting calendar, but how much do you know about the famous NFL helmets that the players wear?
Football helmets have evolved since early headgear made of leather straps, padding, and ear flaps, both in terms of design and material, with players' safety at the heart of spec.
Several components go into making the helmets, each of different materials. The main outer shell that bears the team logo is created using moulded polycarbonate, a very strong polymer that is designed to take maximum impact. This material is strong enough to provide the necessary protection but also light enough to allow players to move quickly.
The lining on the inner shell is made using polyurethane or nitrile foam, which absorbs shock and improves comfort. Some helmets also have air pockets and shock absorbers, too.
Lastly, in the NFL, the face guard around the helmet is usually made of titanium. The multi-bars are coated with Polyarmor G17, a thermoplastic powder coating that resists impact, abrasion, and corrosion.
More recently, visors have also been added to the design to improve sight for players on the field.
