What caused the Arthur Smith-Dennis Allen argument? The likely reason behind the exchange between Falcons and Saints head coachesDAZN

Lip readers, beware!

The final day of the NFL regular season was not without some spice, as the head coaches of the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints got into a verbal confrontation at the end of their Week 18 match-up on Sunday.

The Saints overcame a quick start by the visiting Falcons to claim a dominant 48-17 victory. It was a must-win game for both teams, who each entered the game outside the playoff spots.

With that in mind, the Saints made sure there was no doubt who would be coming away with the "W," as they scored double-digit points in each of the final three quarters.

While New Orleans' eagerness was understandable, it seems Falcons head coach Arthur Smith took exception to the Saints' final score of the game, which came with 1:10 remaining and Atlanta down by 24.

Most would assume that with the game already in hand the Saints would simply run out the clock even with the ball just a couple of yards from the end zone, but they instead elected to score one final touchdown.

That seemed to set off Smith, who wasted little time after the game to confront his Saints counterpart, Dennis Allen, with a few choice words that are fairly easy to interpret even without the help of sound.

Was it sour grapes from Smith, or should Allen have instructed his players to let the clock run out instead of adding to an already lopsided score line?
