The objective of an American football game is simple, score more points than the opposition to get the win.
There are a number of ways teams can score points, but the best way of doing so is by scoring touchdowns.
But what is a touchdown? DAZN explains below.
What is a touchdown in American football?
A touchdown is a way of scoring when a player brings the ball into their opponent's endzone.
This can be done through running, passing or recovering a live ball in the endzone.
How many points is a touchdown worth?
A touchdown is worth six points.
What is breaking the plane?
In order for a touchdown to count, the scoring player must have possession of the ball, be in bounds and the ball must cross the plane of the goal line.
This is where American football is different to other sports because a player does not need to cross the goal line in order for a touchdown to be scored.
As long as the player is in possession and the ball crosses the goal line, a touchdown is awarded.
This rule is kept in check by officials standing on the goal line who make sure the ball carrier breaks an imaginary 3D plane of the goal line when scoring a touchdown.
