What is the greatest ever NFL video game?

Over the years video games have evolved, and so have the platforms they have been played on, so comparing one to another is not straightforward.

There have been plenty of attempts at making NFL video games, some more succesful than others.

Most famously, the John Madden series of NFL video games spans all the way back to 1988, and the 43rd game of the series is set to be released later in 2023.

NFL fans are excited for the release of Madden 24, which is set to bring back the much loved Superstar mode and include several different minigames.

However it is not a Madden game that NFL fans look back on most fondly.

ESPN NFL 2K5

For many, ESPN NFL 2K5 was, and is still, the best NFL video game ever to be released.

The Sega Productions game was the sixth in its series, and the last as Electronic Arts (EA) signed a deal with the league to make the Madden series the only officially licensed NFL game.

ESPN NFL 2K5 set the bar for which all NFL video games had to try and reach, and introduced first-person gameplay for the first time.

Each game was played as if it were a live ESPN coverage, and the 'Franchise Mode' included news segments on injuries and draft prospects while players could design their own team name, logo, jersey and stadium.

Being relased in 2004 the graphics are not comparable to games released in recent years, and making out a player from their avatars face relied on a good amount of guesswork.

But that did not stop ESPN NFL 2K5 scoring 90/100 or higher on Metacritic for all platforms.

NFL Street

EA had enormous success with their FIFA Street game, and although NFL Street did not reach the same heights it was still a big hit.

The game involved seven-on-seven matches, with players wearing informal streetwear as opposed to the jerseys and helmets in Madden.

Matches on NFL Street had no injuries and very little in the way of penalties and fouls, while players could earn style points similarly to in Fifa Street and NBA Street by taunting opponents.

Enough style points would earn players a 'Gamebreaker', an idea taken from NBA Street, which allowed the offensive player to bulldoze defenders for a touchdown.

If you used a 'Gamebreaker' while playing defence you could earn turnovers or force fumbles with ease.

The gameplay is obviously different to the majority of NFL video games created due to the 'Street' element, and the variety of skills and taunts is not vast, however NFL fans and critics still rated the game highly.

Madden NFL 2004

It would be wrong to ignore the Madden series completely, and while a number of its releases have disappointed NFL fans its 2004 edition is arguably the best of the bunch.

Fans of the Madden series will know the 2004 apart from the others immediate due to the gameplay of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick.

Vick's character in the game was almost impossible to stop, and Madden developers had to make changes to future games to reduce the advantage playing as Vick gave players.

Despite the overpowered nature of Vick's character, Madden 2004 scored around 90% from critics on PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC.

The game introduced a new 'Owner Mode' which allowed players to completely change a franchise from the city it is based, its coaching staff and even the cost of refreshments at games.

The 2004 edition was also the first to add 'Playmaker Controls', allowing players to make small tweaks to plays - a feature which is still included in the latest games.

DAZN will deliver the NFL Game Pass International service from the 2023 season across the world (except the U.S. and China), find out more here.
