With Super Bowl LVIII in the rearview mirror, attention has already turned to the 2024 season for the 32 NFL franchises.
Free agency is around the corner, NFL draft boards are being diligently updated and roster decisions are being made across the league.
The new NFL league year will officially start at 4pm ET on March 13 and on that date, teams will need to ensure that they are under the salary cap. Here’s a look at what that means.
What is the NFL salary cap?
Simply put, the salary cap is the limit that each of the 32 NFL franchises can spend on player salaries and bonuses for the upcoming league year.
The final cap limit is calculated based on projected revenues and collectively bargained agreements and has been put in place to help ensure competitive balance across the league.
How much will the NFL salary cap be in 2024?
The final cap number is expected to be confirmed by the NFL next week. Initial reports suggested a figure of around $242m, although NBC’s Mike Florio reports that it could be as high as $250m.
How much cap space does each team have?
According to Over the Cap, who have estimated the cap at $242m, here is a look at how much space each side has. For those currently over the cap, roster cuts or contract restructures will be needed in order to comply with the final cap figure, while those with plenty of cap space will have the opportunity to chase big-money free agents next month.
