The Kansas City Chiefs will be chasing history in New Orleans on February 9.
Should Andy Reid’s side get the better of the Philadelphia Eagles in their rematch of Super Bowl LVII, they will have become the first team in NFL history to win three Super Bowls in a row.
The Chiefs head to this year’s Super Bowl having contested four of the past five showpiece finals, winning three of them to cement their status as the best team of the 2020s so far.
But where do they rank compared to previous NFL dynasties? DAZN News ranks the best teams of the Super Bowl era.
5. Dallas Cowboys (1991-95)
Compared to some of the dynasties on this list, the 1990s Cowboys era was over almost as quickly as it began. Under the leadership of Jimmy Johnson ‘America’s team’ went from 1-15 basement dwellers to Super Bowl championships in three years.
The ‘triplets’ of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin took the headlines as Dallas became the first team to win three Super Bowls in four years.
Johnson left after the second win, with Barry Switzer in charge of their Super Bowl XXX victory, but the team dropped to a 6-10 record two years later and have yet to return to even a Conference Championship game.

4. Kansas City Chiefs (2019-present)
When all is said and done, the Chiefs may well end up higher on this list, but for now, they’ll have to settle for fourth spot.
Three Super Bowl wins in six years and the chance to three-peat is impressive by anyone’s standards, but with Andy Reid showing few signs of slowing down and Mahomes only turning 30 next season, they should remain contenders for some time yet.
3. San Francisco 49ers (1981-94)

The 49ers’ revolutionary West Coast offense, dreamt up by Bill Walsh and executed by the likes of Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and Roger Craig fired the team to four Super Bowl wins in the 1980s, with Steve Young leading the team to a then-unprecedented fifth Vince Lombardi trophy in 1994.
An underrated defense, led by Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott also played its part, with the Niners going on to win 13 divisional titles and earn 10 appearances in the NFC Championship game, with a perfect 5-0 Super Bowl record during an 18-year spell.
The 1990 Niners also came close to a three-peat, losing a tense Championship game to the New York Giants thanks to a missed field goal and a devastating hit on Montana by Leonard Marshall that effectively ended his San Francisco career.
2. Pittsburgh Steelers (1972-1979)
The Pittsburgh Steelers were the NFL’s ‘team of the ‘70s’ for good reason. Head coach Chuck Noll delivered four Vince Lombardi trophies in six seasons in an era of heavyweight teams including Don Shula’s once-perfect Miami Dolphins, Tom Landry’s Dallas Cowboys and John Madden’s Oakland Raiders.
The catalyst for their four Super Bowl titles was their 1974 rookie class, which saw the Steelers draft five future Hall of Famers in Jack Lambert, Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, Mike Webster and Donnie Shell. During their peak six-year stretch, the Steelers won six division titles, posted a 80-22-1 record and won all four of the Super Bowls they contested.
1. New England Patriots (2002-2019)

The only valid argument one can have about whether to put the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick Patriots at the top of the list or not is that this could be seen as two separate dynasties.
A 24-year-old Brady led the Pats to the first Super Bowl in franchise history in Super Bowl XXXVI, with the team going on to make it three wins in four seasons with wins over the Panthers and Eagles in 2002 and 2004.
A ten-year title drought followed before three titles in the five years between 2014 and 2019 book-ended the dynasty, but they were always contenders, as this middle decade included a 16-0 regular season and two Super Bowl defeats to the New York Giants.
The 19-year run which saw the Pats win 18 divisional titles, claim 30 playoff wins, play in nine Super Bowls and earn six rings, all in the era of the salary cap, means that even if the Chiefs do make it three-in-a-row, the Pats will remain at the top of this list - for now at least.
