Tyreek Hill is the fastest player in the NFL.
A former track star, Tyreek Hill has become one of the NFL's most devastating wide receivers.
The speedster is starring in 2023; DAZN looks closer at Hill's incredible career.
Where was Tyreek Hill selected in the NFL Draft?
Hill was a two-sport star in high school. He was a ferociously fast sprinter and a highly talented running back. Hills' collegiate career saw him make stops at Garden City, Oklahoma State, and West Alabama. Hill never set the college world alight, but his athletic traits made him an interesting late-round selection. Hill hit 19mph on his 40-yard dash and completed it in 4.2 seconds. The Kansas City Chiefs thought this speed would fit their special teams unit, and the Chiefs drafted him with the 165th pick in round five of the 2016 NFL Draft.
Rookie returner and the Patrick Mahomes effect
Hill slotted into the Chiefs teams as a returner on special teams. His game-breaking speed and agility helped him earn Pro Bowl honours. Hill totaled 976 yards on 53 returns. Seeing that production, the Chiefs elevated Hill to a starting wide receiver in 2017, and he performed with a dominant week one performance against the New England Patriots. Hill posted 133 receiving yards and scored one touchdown. That season, Hill started 13 games, recording over 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns. Hill displayed that he was a potent part of the Chiefs offense, and he got more help the following year.
The arrival of Patrick Mahomes took Hill and the Chiefs' offense to a stratospheric level. Kansas City dominated defenses, and Hill's speed made him and Mahomes the most explosive offensive duo in the NFL. He tallied a monstrous 1,479 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.
Chiefs fans labeled Hill the 'Cheetah,' and his speed and skill made him the most feared wide receiver in the NFL. Hill and the Chiefs fell to the Patriots in the 2018-19 AFC Championship game. They went one better in 2019-20 as Hill helped the Chiefs win the Super Bowl.
As the years ticked on, Mahomes and Hill etched themselves into the history books as one of the sport's most influential duo. Two more 1,000-yard-plus receiving seasons followed, and Hill tallied a career-best 15 touchdowns in 2020. Hill was flying, but the Chiefs could not give him the contract he wanted. Hamstrung with the salary cap, Kansas City had to trade Hill, and they traded him to the Miami Dolphins.
The fastest player ever
Hill joined Miami and their new head coach, Mike McDaniel. Renowned as a mad scientist, McDaniel has reinvented Hill's role as a wide receiver and unlocked even more production out of the speedster. With all of Miami's pre-snap fast motions and matchup manipulation, Hill is playing the best football of his career. In 2022, Hill recorded a mammoth 1,710 receiving yards. Through six weeks of 2023, Hill is on pace to shatter that. Right now, he is averaging 19.4 yards per catch.
Hill also owns the record for the fastest speed from an NFL player. During this season, Next Gen Stats data clocked Hill hitting 22mph. Hill would have broken speed limits if he were running in London on that particular day.
At 29 years old, Hill is in his prime, playing better than ever. Defenses have still not worked out how to defend him, and his maturity has seen him iron out the character flaws that impacted his college career.
Building a legacy
Hill's CV is astonishingly good. He has made the Pro Bowl seven consecutive seasons and has four First-Team All-Pro selections. Add that to a Super Bowl win and a spot on the NFL 2010s All-Decade team, and Hill is building a Hall of Fame Career.
