Andy Ruiz Jr. plans on reigning as the unified world heavyweight champion for a long time.
Of course, he must start by defeating Anthony Joshua in their highly-anticipated rematch on Dec. 7 in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. If he's successful there, Ruiz already has an opponent in mind for 2020 — none other than lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.
"I know I became the champion of the world, and I want to defend [the title] a lot of times," Ruiz told Mike Tyson on the "Hotboxin' with Mike Tyson" podcast. "I want to fight Tyson Fury."
This comes after Fury told Tyson on the same podcast earlier last month that he'd jab Ruiz to victory if the two ever fought.
"I would tie one hand behind my back and beat him with either one," Fury said. "That would be the easiest fight ever."
Getting the "Gypsy King" in the ring might be a hard task for Ruiz, considering that Fury and WBC champion Deontay Wilder have a deal in place for their own rematch in February. Luis Ortiz pulling off an upset of Wilder on Nov. 23 in Las Vegas could possibly free Fury up to fight Ruiz, but only if Ruiz is successful against Joshua first.
Another scenario would be both Wilder and Ruiz winning their fall bouts and the former trying to wiggle out of his deal with Fury to take a crack at Ruiz with undisputed heavyweight glory on the line. Any way you slice it, the heavyweight picture should come into focus by the end of the year.
