Angelo Dundee trained many big fighters, but who was the biggest puncher the legendary coach worked with?
Dundee had the pleasure of working with Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard, but neither man is considered the most heavy-handed fighter trained by Dundee.
The honor goes to Cuba’s Florentino Fernandez, a boxer famous for his fights with Gene Fullmer and Rubin Carter.
The Cuban walked away from boxing in 1972 following a loss to Vernon Macintosh. He died in 2013.
“Nobody could punch like Fernandez. He was the best puncher out of Cuba. He was a converted southpaw, so his left hook was murder,” said Dundee when speaking to The Ring long before his sad passing in 2012.
“He broke Gene Fullmer’s forearm with a left hook during their middleweight title fight. He could hurt anyone with any kind of punch no matter where it landed.”
