Angel Fernandez believes Anthony Joshua will need to get Francis Ngannou on the back fight if he is to win their bout next month.
Fernandez is a former coach of the Briton, and was part of the two teams that saw him lose to Oleksandr Usyk, alongside Rob McCracken for the first fight, and then Robert Garcia for the rematch.
Since then, Joshua has experimented with Derrick James and then Davison, and it is with the latter he has seemed most impressive, with a stoppage win coming against Otto Wallin in December last month.
Joshua returns to the same country, Saudi Arabia, to face Ngannou on March 8, live on “Because I make my own decisions, I know how to get the business contracts done, I do the biggest PPVs, and I’m my own boss so I can move and go wherever I want. So yes, I am the new Floyd in this sport, and yes, everybody wants to fight me.” Live on DAZN PPV: Anthony Joshua vs. Francis Ngannou on March 8. Click here for details and how to purchase.
Fernandez discussed the progress Joshua had made with new trainers, saying to Talksport: “With fighters you have to start to come back into confidence and belief a bit more in yourself. You have to give him time and progression to get that confidence back.
“If we had two or three fights in between that were win, to get back to who he was before. Now hopefully Ben brings that out of AJ.”
He turned to the test Ngannou offered, and added: “Any fight is dangerous especially against Ngannou. Both great fighters. I think the game plan for AJ is to sit behind the jab, footwork and use the distance.
“That doesn’t mean on the back foot, but he needs to instead get Ngannou to fight on the back foot so I believe he can get the win.”
