The former world champion hopes to get back in the mix for another belt, as he explained on the UK version of The DAZN Boxing Show.

Liam Smith hopes his upcoming clash with Anthony Fowler will lead to another world title fight.

The 33-year-old British fighter was WBO light middleweight champion between 2015 and 2016 until he lost the strap to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

Smith told the DAZN Boxing Show that he hoped he could prove himself again at 154lbs.

“That’s the plan and obviously the Fowler [fight] probably reassures maybe Eddie [Hearn] or somebody else that you know I am still wanted at 154,” he claimed.

“They're gonna try. Fowler is not ready for that yet, so I'll move on. I still got a lot left in the tank. Let's push on. [I] should beat Fowler and get back in the world title mix next.

Despite his advancing years he believes he can still make the weight.

“I'm long in the tooth now to know I won't overdo it. I'm not killing myself now,” he said.

“If Fowler wanted to fight he should have fought the last time I was out for 17 months. I had made 154 for over two years. And you know they picked me at the wrong time. I'll be back to the game come October 9.“
