If you aren't familiar with the name Brandon Figueroa, it might be time to get familiar.
"The Heartbreaker" crushed Javier Chacon with a fourth-round KO to retain his interim WBA super bantamweight title before his hometown fans at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, Texas as the headliner of "PBC on FS1" on Saturday night.
The 22-year-old Figueroa looked wise beyond his years, systematically breaking down the 38-year-old Chacon with punishing body shots early on, before unleashing a right hook to the temple and a right uppercut to drop the veteran during the fourth round. Chacon attempted to get up, but fell face-first to the canvas and was counted out to give Figueroa (20-0, 15 KOs) his 20th career pro victory.
“He wasn’t throwing any punches, so I had to rough him up,” Figueroa said in the ring following his win. “I had to get inside to fight his game because he didn’t want to fight mine and I caught him with a good right hook.”
Although Figueroa told Sporting News earlier in the week that he'd like to face a super bantamweight world champion following this convincing victory, Stephen Fulton, who earned a stoppage of his own earlier on Saturday night, did step into the ring to publicly challenge Figueroa.
So, perhaps that could be the next fight for Figueroa if a bout against one of the division champions doesn't immediately happen.
