WBC and WBA super middlweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez believes that he would defeat Floyd Mayweather were they to ever fight again.
Mayweather inflicted Canelo’s only professional defeat back in 2013, but in the past seven years the Mexican has become one of, if not the, best pound-for-pound boxers in the sport today.
Speaking to Univision and transcribed by BoxingScene.com, Canelo believes that the improvements he has made after winning belts at four divisions would result in a different outcome were they to meet again. Of course, Mayweather has since retired from boxing and at the age of 44 is unlikely to ever be the fighter he once was.
"Without a doubt I would beat him, it would be a very different fight. I am a more mature fighter, it would be a totally different fight,” Canelo said.
“I have more experience, I learned a lot. I said that this was not going to stop me [the loss in 2013], that I would be the best in the world at some point, it hurt a lot because I wanted to win, but only God knows why he does the things he does," Canelo said.
The topic of the 50-0 star came up as a result of Saunders claiming he would provide Canelo his biggest frustrations since the Mexican's solitary 'L'.
In response to that, Alvarez said: "We will see on May 8 if he is the best opponent that I've faced, but it's being assumed that he is.
"Yes, he is a fighter who moves a lot, he's left-handed, with experience. He is supposed to be one of the most difficult opponents that I've faced."
Canelo will fight Billy Joe Saunders on May 8 on DAZN.
