Teddy Atlas was impressed with David Benavidez's recent win over Demetrius Andrade but believes the Arizona man will have to do more against Canelo Alvarez.
Benavidez maintained his impressive run with a stoppage over the two-weight world champion and he immediately set his sights on facing Canelo in 2024.
A fight between Canelo and Benavidez is one of the biggest that could be made in boxing right now and it’s one Benavidez seems eager for.
Canelo is a major step up from Andrade and the way Benavidez approached his last fight won’t be enough to register a win against one of the sport’s best fighters, Atlas believes.
“I’ll put it out there, I don’t know if he can do that with Canelo,” said Atlas when speaking on The Fight podcast.
“I don’t know if he can if he ever fights Canelo. If Canelo’s gonna call himself the best Mexican and the top 168 pounder, he has to fight Benavidez to justify that.
“Don’t think so quickly that if Benavidez fights Canelo, he can just walk forward the way he did with Andrade, because the punches that will land on him will have more consequence. They will have more impact, they will be harder.”
