Carlos Canizales can certainly pack a punch at 108 pounds. His 17 KOs in 23 total pro fights are proof of that.
The undefeated WBA (Regular) junior flyweight champion will look to get back to recording his latest hits Friday, when he puts his title on the line against Esteban Bermudez in Mexico City.
The bout marks Canizales' first title defense in slightly more than two years, as he last fought in May 2019 and delivered a unanimous decision over Sho Kimura. Despite the lengthy layoff, Canizales vows that ring rust won't be an issue.
“I’ve never been away from the gym, I’ve always been training and I’m not worried about that," the Venezuelan fighter told WBABoxing.com. "I have always worked the same, I have been constant and I don’t think I will have problems because I have been active.”
He added: "I am 100% sure that the title will come back to Venezuela."
Canizales first captured the championship in March 2018 with Friday's bout marking his third title defense.
Bermudez enters the fight a bit shakier, having produced three different results in his last three bouts. The Mexican fighter is coming off a draw with Luis Manuel Macias in March. Prior to that, he had notched a TKO in December and lost by unanimous decision in October.
Will Canizales make his latest title defense in his opponent's home country or will Salas pull off what would be a significant upset?
