The last time the Charlo brothers co-headlined a card, Jermall successfully defended his middleweight title, but Jermell lost his junior middleweight strap in controversial fashion.
This time around, the identical twin world champions will look to make it a clean sweep. Jermall will headline a three-fight card, as he looks to defend his middleweight championship against top contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko. Following that, Jermell will put his own WBC championship up against Jeison Rosario's WBA/IBF belts in a junior middleweight title unification bout as the headliner of a separate three-fight card.
It's all part of a massive doubleheader, which takes place Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., live on Showtime pay-per-view. In total, five of the six fights are for world titles.
Jermall (30-0, 22 KOs) will vie to get the night started on the right foot for the Charlo brothers against a battle-tested Derevyanchenko (13-2, 10 KOs), who took Gennadiy Golovkin the distance last October before losing via a controversial unanimous decision. Jermall is expecting a tough fight from the rugged Ukrainian, but for the WBC strap to stay put around his waist.
"There’s been 30 fighters who’ve tried to beat me and all 30 failed," Jermell reminded Derevyanchenko during Thursday's press conference. "We’ll get a chance to get in there and do what we do best on Saturday. Talk is cheap. We’ll see where that green belt goes on Saturday."
Meanwhile, Jermell (33-1, 17 KOs) can walk out of Connecticut with three out of the four junior middleweight world titles in his possession — an opportunity he doesn't want to squander against Rosario (20-1-1, 14 KOs).
“Saturday night is going to be my history-making performance," Jermell vowed. "This is something that I’ve always wanted and that I’ve always trained for. I’ve put in the hard work for every fight I’ve ever had and this is what it’s all been for."
Jermell avenged his lone loss by viciously knocking out Tony Harrison to reclaim his WBC title in their December rematch. Now, he wants to tack on another big win.
He added about the doubleheader: "This is our Super Bowl. This is our national championship. It’s time for us to go get our belts."
