The "GWOAT" describes the genesis of this bout.

Claressa Shields already counts her current undisputed middleweight world championship and formerly the undisputed junior middleweight crown and unified super middleweight titles to her name.

So how did the "GWOAT (Greatest Woman of All Time)" leaping up to challenge WBC heavyweight world champion Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse on Saturday night, live on DAZN, even come about?

Well during an exclusive interview with DAZN News, Shields offered an explanation about how daring to be great by clinching a fourth-division title came out of necessity this time around.

"We’re looking for the best challenges and we were looking for the best challenges at 147 —  If there was a world champion there that wanted to fight us and there wasn’t one there," Shields began explaining.

"We went to 154, we called out Natasha Jonas and a few of those girls there and nobody wanted to fight us. Then, I’m undisputed at 160, nobody wanted to fight me there."

Those dead ends forced the 29-year-old Shields to keep looking.

"At 168, we have Franchon [Crews Dezurn] and Savannah [Marshall] and they want to fight each other so when we fight again, it’s undisputed vs. undisputed, so it really wasn’t anywhere to go but up," Shields continued.

"And then when we had the girls at heavyweight, they’re like ‘Claressa’s too small for us and we’re too strong for her, we’re too big for her.’ And I was just like ‘Well, maybe, maybe not.’"

She added: "So that’s why we went there to go for a fourth division. It’s great to have a champion (Joanisse) who holds the belt and to take her belt and become the new heavyweight champion.

"It’s something I’ve never experienced and never thought about until now. Hey, we’re just going for greatness once again."

While Joanisse ultimately fit the bill and was up to Shields' challenge, the "GWOAT" says New Zealand heavyweight Lani Daniels was actually her camp's first opponent choice.

"I was supposed to fight against Lani Daniels but then something happened with Lani Daniels and then Vanessa came up," Shields revealed. "We had Lani signed for the fight first so after she said something was wrong with her, of course we went to the next best which is Vanessa."
