The 32-year-old former welterweight champion recently called for a fight with the 26-year-old multi-division beltholder.
Davis’ last fight was at 140lbs, but that represents a step up for a boxer who has made his name as a lightweight. Thurman fights at 147lbs and that could pose a problem for Davis, according to Akin ‘Ak’ Reyes.
“Keith is a welterweight,” Reyes began. “And Gervonta is a lightweight, a small lightweight at that. So I don't think it's a smart fight for Gervonta to make.
“Not saying Gervonta couldn't pull it off. I mean, he's a hell of a fighter. He can hit hard. But why? I mean, I think the fight is good, but I think Leonard [Ellerbe] was a little disrespectful treating the former welterweight champion like that, and so that's why Keith fired back for those that didn't know.”
Barak Bess thought that it was not too sensible a fight to make, with so many contenders across the 135lb division, while he also pointed out that Davis may need time to compose himself after a recent plane crash.
“Of course, and there's a smaller guy, a much smaller guy,” he said.
“I don't think there's a good fight for Keith, because he's a smaller guy. There's too many guys in your division here. One of the best divisions in the world and so is Gervonta Davis, if he goes back down to 135.
“But we got something else to deal with. This guy was just in a plane crash, like his private jet was trying to take off, they had to abort and it looks like it crashed, and he needs to get better.
“That's what I think he needs to be focusing on. And if you notice everybody's talking about your Gervonta Davis except Gervonta Davis, so we just want to give you well wishes: get better, champ, and I'm glad you survived that horrific time.”
