Daniel Dubois: Dillian Whyte should fight me, not Alexander PovetkinDAZN
Daniel Dubois believes he is a more suitable fight for Dillian Whyte than his proposed rematch against Alexander Povetkin.

British heavyweight boxer Daniel Dubois suggested that Dillian Whyte should fight him instead of taking on Alexander Povetkin again.

The undefeated 22-year-old boxer was last week mooted as a potential opponent for Whyte, even when he was being lined up to fight Tyson Fury in anticipation of a win against Povetkin.

However, the 40-year-old Russian's surprise win means that Whyte is entitled to a rematch with Povetkin, which should take place towards the end of the year, and Fury is now free to schedule a match with Anthony Joshua, should he defeat Deontay Wilder.

Dubois praised Povetkin’s knockout blow on Saturday night, saying, “It was a shocker the way the fight ended and the way it set up. It was a perfect shot.”

Despite the loss, Dubois believed Whyte was on top until that point.

“Dillian was doing well. He was winning. He dropped him twice, but the Russian pulled back the clock.”

Dubois praised Povetkin for knocking out an opponent eight years his junior.

“To do that at 40 years old.

“He didn’t look too worn out, he looked fresh and was throwing sharp shots though.

“Shows these young boys got to step up.”

While Whyte is desperate for a rematch against Povetkin to win back his WBC interim title and mandatory challenger status, Dubois suggested he could fight the 32-year-old after his own scheduled fights.

“I think Dillian Whyte and me is a better option, as Povetkin is back in the mandatory for a world title. So I feel Dillian, that’s the more logical, and I want that fight to happen. Maybe after Joe [Joyce] we go wait and see.”
