Daniel Dubois’ new trainer Mark Tibbs is looking forward to working with the young boxer after his defeat to Joe Joyce.
The 23-year-old heavyweight lost to the 35-year-old fighter as Joyce claimed the British, Commonwealth and European titles for the division.
In the process he fractured Dubois’ orbital bone and gave him nerve damage, which has kept Dubois away from the ring until he is given the green light for a return by doctors.
The defeat represented Dubois’ first loss and he has now brought in Tibbs as his trainer as he prepares for a comeback.
Tibbs told BoxingScene.com that he was looking to improve the young contender.
“I believe I can bring something to Daniel’s game,” said Tibbs
“I can add some seasoning to his game and make him a different fighter. I’m confident in that, and it won’t take too long.”
Dubois’ promoter Frank Warren had pencilled him in for a fight in April or May, but Tibbs was more cautious about when he should get back into the ring.
“There’s no point in him fighting in April,” Tibbs explained.
“Especially after the injury he suffered and sustained. It’s my responsibility to bond with him, see where he is psychologically before I can move forward with him so I plan to get him on my trip to America [for Canelo-Saunders] and hopefully I’ll be able to work with him in my spare time. I’ve still got to clear that with Billy Joe but that’s my plan. We’re still negotiating bits and pieces.”
“I do like the heavyweights, there’s a bit of magic about the heavyweights and I’ve got a guy, Johnny Fisher, who’s making his debut on the 20th on the Matchroom card and they’ll be good for each other in my gym.”
