Daniel Jacobs-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. weight limit changed to 173 pounds

The teams of Jacobs and Chavez agreed to a new weight limit instead of the original 168 pounds.

One of the biggest obstacles in the career of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has been his inability to successfully make weight at the original contracted weight for the fight.

The bug bit him once again, as the son of the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez weighed in at 172.7 pounds for his fight against Daniel Jacobs on Friday, 4.7 pounds above the 168-pound super middleweight limit. Jacobs came in at 167.7. However, an agreement between the Chavez and Jacobs camps was reached before the official weigh-in to keep the fight and will be taking place at a catchweight of 173 pounds.

Chavez's issues with making weight became evident in his first contest against Brian Vera in September 2013 when he came in at 172 pounds for a super middleweight title fight. Then three fights later vs. Marcos Reyes in another scheduled super middleweight bout, the former WBC middleweight champion blew past the weight limit.

It is only the second time Chavez (51-3-1, 33 KOs) steps into the ring since he lost to Canelo Alvarez in May 2017, in which he made the 164.5-pound catchweight limit. He returned in August to knock out Evert Bravo.

But Chavez faced other issues leading up to the Jacobs fight. He'd been given an indefinite suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission for failing to submit to a random drug test in October as the bout was originally scheduled to occur at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Chavez then filed a lawsuit against the NSAC. On Tuesday, a Nevada State Court judge granted Chavez a temporary restraining order, so he's cleared to face Jacobs on Friday night.
