Eddie Hearn believes that he is close to making a fight between Devin Haney and his WBC mandatory challenger JoJo Diaz.
That may come as a surprise as Diaz has appeared keener on fighting the previous interim champion, Ryan Garcia, who was also reluctant to take on 22-year-old Haney.
Speaking to the DAZN Boxing Show, Hearn said there was a good chance of the fight going ahead.
“Now we're going through the numbers as early as this week, and trying to get that made,” he said.
“JoJo, saying, ‘Oh, I could fight Ryan Garcia, I could fight’. I don't know whether Ryan will fight this year. I saw a post yesterday that he put out saying 2022 is going to be my year - big fights only.
“So does that mean you're still planning on running out this year? Are you just going to wait? I don't know. But these months are coming up quick. It’s September next week. So when you start thinking about October, we're getting ready. We're looking at possible dates in September, but even our October shows that we're announcing probably next week. That's not far away. Seven, eight weeks away.
“You know, and when you start talking about a December fight, people think, ‘December, that's not that long away.’ You got [Anthony Joshua] one month today, September 25.”
