Devin Haney and Jose Ramirez prepare for next chapter at welterweight

DAZN
Haney v Ramirez; Garcia v Romero DAZN PPV - May 2

Devin Haney and Jose Ramirez both have something to prove when they meet in New York City for a welterweight fight on May 2, live on DAZN PPV worldwide.

Haney and Ramirez's bout is one of three that make up the "Fatal Fury In Times Square" card, which also features Ryan Garcia vs. Rolly Romero and Teofimo Lopez vs. Arnold Barboza Jr.

The duo are both former super lightweight champions who will be moving up to 147lbs for this fight, with Haney ending a year-long hiatus after his controversial bout against Garcia in April 2024.

For Haney, the time and the opponent are right for his return.

"I took a year off like I said I was going to," Haney said at a press conference on Tuesday. "I wanted to come back when I felt it was the right time.

"But when I came back I wanted to fight the best fighters in the world, I didn't want to face any regular 'Joe Blow'. I wanted to fight a two-time world champion like Jose Ramirez."

Meanwhile, Ramirez admitted that he should have moved up to 147lbs earlier in his career, and he felt that the trouble of trying to make weight at 140lbs contributed to his losing performance against Barboza in November.

But while the 32-year-old is eager to step into the ring with Haney, he says he wasn't holding out for a specific opponent to face in his first fight after a defeat.

"I've never been too worried about my opposition in my career, I just focus on myself," he said. "I became the best boxer at lightweight in the Americas, becoming an Olympian, beating guys with different styles."

Ramirez also issued a warning to Haney: "I think people underestimate my speed and power, but I'm ready to put it together on May 2. You thought I was strong at 140, just watch me at 147."
