Dillian Whyte has revealed that he wanted the rematch clause to be scrapped for his rematch with Anthony Joshua which in turn has increased the stakes ahead of their heavyweight showdown on August 12.
The rematch clause would ensure that if Whyte defeated Joshua, his next fight would then be a third professional bout with the former two-time world heavyweight champion, this is a common clause in boxing’s biggest fights.
Whyte spoke to The DAZN Boxing Show to explain his reasoning for removing the clause.
“I want to progress, if It’s a good fight we can do a rematch. We don’t need a rematch clause if it’s a good fight we’re going to rematch anyway," Whyte said.
“I don’t want to be contracted, be tied down. Imagine a good fight, he gets injured and goes I’ve got to wait 8 months, I can’t do nothing.”
Whyte also claimed that Eddie Hearn did not want to make the fight, and it was Anthony Joshua that called for the fight.
Whyte said: “[Anthony Joshua] he wants to prove to people he’s still a dog and he’s still got a dog in him but that’s good like I say that could work in my favour.”
