Eddie Hearn believes that Devin Haney would be the favourite if he fought former lightweight champion Vasiliy Lomachenko.
Lomachenko held belts from all four governing bodies, including a WBC ‘franchise’ belt while Haney was the WBC regular champion, back in 2020 until he lost to Teofimo Lopez.
Lopez was then beaten by George Kambosos, who lost twice to Haney in Australia, meaning that the American is the undisputed champion at 135lbs.
Haney wanted a fight with the Ukrainian long before the recent merry-go-round but now it appears that the pair will meet as they look for their next fight.
Lomachenko fought Jamaine Ortiz at the weekend and secured his third consecutive victory after losing to Lopez two years ago.
Speaking to the DAZN Boxing Show, Hearn believes that Haney is in a stronger position than ever to beat the former champion.
“I know it was a particularly close fight, I just think it could be a mixture of a lot of things. I could be a little bit of ring rust, a little bit of a lack of motivation in a fight like that,” he said.
“It could be that he’s had 400 amateur fights, surgery, getting a little bit older. It could be great timing for Devin, I don’t see, I make Devin a massive favourite in that favourite right now. I always believed Devin could beat him but back then, Devin was a little bit unproven, Loma was flying.
“I just think with Devin’s momentum, his size at that weight, that performance, I just make him the favourite. But great fighters turn it on. I expect a much better Lomachenko in an undisputed fight.”
