Eddie Hearn hopes to make a fight between Julio Cesar Martinez and Sunny Edwards for a unification fight at flyweight.
IBF champion Edwards will take on Muhammad Waseem in Dubai on March 19 to defend his strap, while Hearn predicts that Martinez will make a mandatory defence of his WBC championship against McWilliams Arroyo on May 7 as part of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Dimitry Bivol card.
Martinez was defeated by Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez on March 5 but will return to 112lbs. Martinez and Arroyo played out a three round no-contest back in November 2021 after a headbutt.
“Of course, one of the conditions of taking that fight was that he has to fight his mandatory [McWilliams Arroyo] because of the tactical draw, but we’re going to do that real quick. It might even be on the Canelo card,” Hearn told IFL TV.
“He’ll [Martinez] be back out in May and then we’ll do the fight in the summer,” Hearn continued about his plans to have Martinez and Sunny Edwards meet in a unification fight in the summer.
“Martinez has to unify otherwise it becomes boring. If [Sunny Edwards is] nice, we’ll give him a fight.”
Edwards believes he would win any contest.
“It’s an intriguing match-up and a high-profile fight,” he explained. “Everyone is talking about me in every conversation and in every interview. My name is mentioned.
“My intentions are to let Eddie know, to let Martinez know, to let Eddy Reynoso know and everyone involved with Martinez, I’ll fight him anywhere in the world. I do not care.
“I got a chance to achieve what so few actually get to do. The moment the phone rings, that fight is getting made. That’s an easy fight.”
