Johnny Nelson made the headlines recently when he provided details of Tyson Fury’s current training camp for his upcoming bout with Oleksandr Usyk.
According to Nelson, the reigning WBC champion is enduring a tough time in the gym with sparring partners, and he’s not been having things his own way.
One fighter who was briefly in Fury’s set-up for his next battle was Australian cruiserweight, Jai Opetaia.
Despite possessing outstanding credentials, Opetaia only managed five rounds sparring before leaving the camp as he requires more orthodox sparring ahead of his next fight with Mairis Briedis.
Eddie Hearn, Opetaia’s promoter, has revealed more from what happened in Fury’s gym.
“Johnny Nelson was adamant that Fury had been dropped in sparring by Jai Opetaia. Jai Opetaia is with Matchroom, he’s a tremendous fighter. As far as I can see, it’s absolute rubbish,” said Hearn when speaking to Talksport.
“Jai Opetaia flew in, he did five rounds with Tyson Fury. I mean, he will set about him as he always does, but as I understand it nobody got hurt or dropped in the spar.
“So, I think it’s absolute rubbish, sparring stories are sparring stories. As I understand it, Fury’s having a great camp and I think he’s taking it very seriously.”
